AMS 2 Pro vs Original AMS: What Actually Changes, From Bambu’s Own Specs

Published August 15, 2026

Researched guide

The AMS 2 Pro adds a heater that dries up to 65 °C, spool rotation during drying and a faster feeding motor. The original AMS relies on a sealed enclosure with desiccant and a humidity sensor. Both hold four spools. On X1 and P1 printers the AMS 2 Pro needs extra accessories, and drying needs the adapter. Last checked October 25, 2026.

How this guide was made

This is a researched comparison using Bambu Lab’s published pages as of October 25, 2026. I have not used both units side by side, so treat the table as Bambu’s claims, not test results. Prices change by region, so check the store.

What the AMS 2 Pro needs on X1 and P1

Bambu says the AMS 2 Pro works with its printers, but X1 and P1 owners need accessories: a filament buffer or AMS Hub, bus cables, PTFE parts and, for drying, the Switching Adapter. Upgrade Kit 1 covers the parts for one unit (see the P1S installation guide). The drying feature also needed a firmware update on those printers.

Limits to know

  • Drying tops out at 65 °C. Bambu says some filaments need more and recommends the AMS HT for those.
  • Drying while printing depends on the printer and whether the unit is part of the print. See the AMS 2 Pro drying guide for the details.
  • Each AMS 2 Pro that dries on an X1 or P1 needs its own adapter (see the power adapter guide).

Questions to ask before you buy

  1. Do you need active drying, or is a sealed enclosure with desiccant enough for your filament and climate?
  2. Which printer do you own? The accessories and power rules differ, and they affect the total cost.
  3. How many units will you dry at once? That sets how many adapters you need.
  4. Do you print filaments that need more than 65 °C? If so, ask whether an AMS HT fits better.
  5. Will you mix both? Bambu’s CA store says you can use both an AMS and an AMS 2 Pro on one H2D.

I have left out any verdict like “worth it” because that depends on your printer, filament and budget.
