Can You Use the Original AMS and AMS 2 Pro Together on the Same Printer?
Yes. Bambu Lab’s official FAQ confirms that X1, P1, H2D, and H2S printers can connect and print with both the original (1st-gen) AMS and the AMS 2 Pro at the same time. However, you must use the new-version 6-pin cable (2.5 mm step height) when connecting the AMS 2 Pro—the original AMS is compatible with the new cable, but the AMS 2 Pro is NOT compatible with the old 1.1 mm cable. If you already own a 1st-generation Bambu Lab AMS, you do not have to sell or retire it when upgrading to an AMS 2 Pro. Bambu Lab’s official FAQ and multi-model connection guide confirm that both generations can run side-by-side on the same printer, provided you follow the cable compatibility rule.
Mixing Original AMS + AMS 2 Pro: Compatibility table
| Question | Official Bambu Lab Rule | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Supported Printers for Mixing | X1 series, P1 series, H2D, and H2S can connect and print with both an original AMS and an AMS 2 Pro simultaneously. | AMS 2 Pro FAQ |
| Does the new 6-pin cable (2.5 mm step) work on the Original AMS? | Yes. The 1st-gen AMS is backward-compatible with the new-version 6-pin cable included with the AMS 2 Pro. | Multi-Model Guide |
| Does the old 6-pin cable (1.1 mm step) work on the AMS 2 Pro? | No. Using a 1st-gen 6-pin cable on an AMS 2 Pro or AMS HT causes unstable communication with the printer. | Multi-Model Guide, FAQ |
| Does the Original AMS gain active drying when chained? | No. The original AMS has no heater or air vents; it continues to rely on passive desiccant storage while the AMS 2 Pro handles active 65 °C drying. | AMS 2 Pro vs Original AMS |
The 6-pin cable trap when mixing generations
The #1 troubleshooting issue when chaining an old AMS with a new AMS 2 Pro is mixing up the 6-pin bus cables in your parts bin:
- 1st-Gen AMS 6-pin cable: Has a 1.1 mm connector step height.
- AMS 2 Pro / AMS HT 6-pin cable: Has a 2.5 mm connector step height.
When daisy-chaining an original AMS and an AMS 2 Pro together, always use the new 2.5 mm step-height cable for the AMS 2 Pro connection (and ideally place the AMS 2 Pro’s new cable between the units), since the 1st-gen AMS accepts the new cable without issue.
How to merge the PTFE tubes on X1/P1 vs. H2D
- On X1C / P1S: Connect both the original AMS and the AMS 2 Pro into an AMS Hub, or into a 4-in-1 PTFE Adapter placed ahead of your existing Filament Buffer.
- On H2D: You can connect the original AMS to one extruder nozzle and the AMS 2 Pro to the second extruder nozzle, or merge both onto one nozzle using a 4-in-1 PTFE Adapter.
